Prepositions of place tell you *where* something is located. We use words like in, on, under, и next to to describe the position of people or objects. For example, if your book is inside your bag, you say The book is in the bag. If it’s on top of the table, you say The book is on the table. When something is below another object, we use under, as in The cat is under the chair. And if two things are side-by-side, we use next to, like The lamp is next to the bed. These simple words are essential for building basic sentences and understanding directions. Learning them helps you clearly communicate about the world around you in English, which is a key skill for Pre-A1 learners.

What Are Prepositions of Place?

Prepositions of place are small words that tell us the position of a person or an object. They answer the question, “Where is it?”

Распространенные ошибки у носителей испанского языка

Spanish speakers often use “en” for both in и on. In English, it’s important to choose the correct preposition:

  • Неправильно: The book is in the table.
  • Правильно: The book is on the table. (Because the book is on the surface of the table, not inside it.)
  • Неправильно: I am on the room.
  • Правильно: I am in the room. (Because you are inside the room.)

Remember: in for inside, on for surfaces.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is a preposition?

A preposition is a word that connects a noun or pronoun to other words in a sentence. Prepositions of place tell us about location, like in, on, или under.

How do I choose between ‘in’ and ‘on’?

Use in when something is inside an enclosed space (like in the box). Use on when something is on a surface (like on the table).

Can I use ‘near’ instead of ‘next to’?

Yes, but they are slightly different. Next to means immediately beside, very close. Near means close, but not necessarily touching or right beside. For example, The park is near my house (it’s close), but My bike is next to the wall (it’s right beside the wall).
