To ask about what someone possesses or has, we use Have got o Has got in question form. This structure is common in British English and is very useful for beginners. For example, you can ask Have you got a car? o Has she got a brother? The choice between Have y Has depends on the subject of your question. We use Have for I, you, we, y they. We use Has for he, she, y it. Short answers are simple: Yes, I have. o No, I haven’t.

Errores habituales de los hispanohablantes

Spanish speakers sometimes make mistakes when using have got questions.

  • Uso de Do/Does: In Spanish, you might use a form of ‘tener’ directly for questions. In English, with have got, we do NOT use do o does.
    • Do you have got a pet?
    • Have you got a pet?
  • Missing got: Remember that got is an important part of this structure.
    • Have you a pet?
    • Have you got a pet?
